Trace the rise and fall of the remarkable Erie
Canal- from the start of construction on July 4, 1817 through its legacy today-
and sail its waters re-living the canal experience of years past. Once
derided as "Clinton's Ditch" (for its mastermind, DeWitt Clinton), the
Erie Canal had a major impact on the development of New York and the United
States in the 19th century. A magnificent engineering
achievement, the Erie Canal spawned a new culture as well as a new chapter in US
history. Originally, the canal cut through 363 miles of wilderness, with
18 aqueducts and 83 locks, and a rise of 568 feet from the Hudson River to Lake
Erie. Gain a deeper understanding of the boats that traveled the canal,
their construction and uses, as well as the people of the canal, their lives and
influences. In addition to historic Chittenango Landing, field trips
introduce important canal-related sites. Then board the cruise vessel
Emita II for a leisurely three-day study cruise to compare and contrast the
historic past with canal life today.
Itinerary
Independent arrivals at Canastota, NY (20 miles east of Syracuse) for 4 nights; "study cruise" on Erie Canal for 3 days; Program ends after lunch on 8th day. All land travel by motor coach.
